NSW: Man stabbed to death on Sydney's north shore: police

SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - A man had been stabbed several times before being found by a motoristnear a busy highway on Sydney's north shore, police said today.

Superintendent Gary Merryweather said 28-year-old David Breckenridge had died "as aresult of a number of puncture wounds to the upper body", according to the preliminaryresult of the post-mortem examination.

He was found by a motorist shortly before midnight on Saturday night as he lay in alaneway just off the Pacific Highway.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, just across the road from where he wasfound, and underwent emergency surgery, but died at around 1.30am (AEST) on Sunday.

Supt Merryweather said investigators from the newly established strike force Westdalewere now trying to establish Mr Breckenridge's movements before his death.

The inner-city barman was on his way to a friend's house in the Greenwich area whenthe attack happened.

He had travelled from the city by train on Saturday night, getting off at St Leonardsand walking along the Pacific Highway.

Along the way he made a phone call and bought a six-pack of beer, however he failedto arrive at his intended destination, police said.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident.
